This is a very exciting day, as not only do I get to introduce you to an awesome new food product that I know you’ll love, but I am hosting my first ever giveaway- yay! I realised today that I have only been properly blogging for 4 months, but it feels like so much longer. I started EMMABYDESIGN in October, but only wrote a handful of posts until January, when I started posting regularly. This came to mind because so many of my other blogger friends are reaching their 6 month or year marks as bloggers, and I still feel like such a newbie!
Anyway, we’re talking about another kind of birthday today. It was my brother’s 28th birthday yesterday, and we all went out for a meal to the Yorkshire Meatball Co. in Harrogate- if you’re ever in the area you must visit for the best meatballs you’ve ever had! I was approached by Baker Days to review one of their letterbox cakes* and of course I jumped at the chance, but I was totally selfless and ordered it for my brother to have, rather than for me and George to scoff, aren’t I just a saint?
Firstly, how amazing is it that in this day and age, we can have a cake delivered through our letterbox? Not only that, but it actually stays intact, fresh and delicious inside its little tin throughout the whole journey?! Madness. But it’s true! Baker Days offer personalised cakes in all different sizes, including cupcakes and birthday cakes, as well as options for all different occasions and tastes.
I was thrilled when I came home to my little parcel, delivered on exactly the day they said it would arrive, with a little card and leaflet inside, not to mention the little tube of Love Hearts and of course the beautifully-presented tin with the cake carefully wrapped up inside to keep it fresh. The cake arrived on a Thursday, and I didn’t have a piece until Tuesday and it was still the best shop-bought (or internet-ordered!) chocolate cake I have ever had. Considering I’m not a massive chocolate cake fan, especially if it’s too dry, this one with chocolate chips within the sponge was glorious. It was so moist and squidgy, and the icing is lovely and soft and not too thick.
I decided to create my own design for the cake, especially as dad just sorted out our loft and discovered a load of old family photos (my favourite!) I love the picture I chose, on the beach when I was around 6 and had buried my brother head-to-toe in sand! That was our favourite thing to do on our little family holidays to Devon when we were younger. Although I’m not sure the image quality is quite as good as that of the Eat Your Photo cupcakes I reviewed a few weeks ago, that could be to do with the image resolution when I saved the design, and also the fact that this is larger than a cupcake! Still, for an image printed on icing, it’s definitely good enough for me!
I also noticed that their website is printed round the side of the cake- what a cute idea!
The cake I chose was made with real Belgian chocolate and chocolate chips, but you can also choose from vanilla sponge, fruit cake, and gluten, wheat or dairy-free options too! They come in four different sizes, as well as the cupcakes, so there’s something for every occasion and every person. Also, the range of designs they have is incredible, or of course you can design your own like I did!
Now, do you like the sound of a letterbox cake? Would you like your own to come home to for a treat after work or school, or to give to someone for a special occasion?
