Today I wanted to talk about two new lip products that I picked up in my Leeds Beauty Haul and, rather than do separate reviews, I thought I’d talk about them together as they are my two new favourite spring lip colours! It certainly feels like spring today- the sun is out and I actually had to take my coat off when walking earlier- maybe the weather is finally changing! Anyway, let’s steer away from another weather rant…
So, what products do we have here?
First up is the MAC Matte Lipstick in Please Me. This is my first ever MAC lipstick, and I feel like I had to fight to get it as the MAC counter in Harvey Nichols was like a zoo- I’ve never seen so many people scrambling for lipstick testers! I tried a few other brighter shades, but wanted my first high end lipstick to be something I could wear every day.
Please Me is a rosy pink colour, which is beautiful for Spring and Summer. I don’t think it looks as dark on as it does in the swatch below, but I think you can see the texture quite well on my hand. It shows up all texture underneath it, which isn’t ideal for me as my lips have a lot of lines on them. As with most matte lipsticks, this is definitely not okay if you have dry lips- they’ll need a good scrub before applying this shade! It looks great with my MUA Lip Pencil in Caramel Nougat (from my Lunchtime Haul here) underneath to make it more of a pinky-nude, but I’m still wearing it with caution at the moment until my lips are on top form when the weather gets warmer.
At £15.50, if you’re wanting a pretty shade from MAC, I’d recommend Creme Cup as a more moisturising version of this that is a very pretty candy pink. I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed with this one, but as it doesn’t make my lips look very good even when they are moisturised, I think I’d go for different MAC finish next time.
Next up, as a complete budget steal at £1, we have an MUA Matte Lipstick in Lilac Belle. I saw this shade on a blog not long after I bought my first MUA lipsticks here, and was disappointed I didn’t pick up a matte colour instead as their normal lipsticks don’t stay on very well at all. Lilac is quite an unusual lip colour for some, but I do like to go a bit different with my shades especially for Spring and Summer.
I actually really like the white packaging of this lipstick, and it stands out in my handbag too! I wore this without a lipliner, as it’s quite a delicate colour and needs a pale foundation base underneath to really stand out. I think it would look gorgeous with a sugary coat of lilac lipgloss over the top- anyone know any good ones? The swatch here is pretty accurate for how it looks on the lips- it’s not too vibrant unless you layer it up, and it lasts reasonably well considering the price. It’s best to have a fairly neutral face and eye look to pull this off, otherwise it can look like you’re wearing too many different colours- I paired it with Benefit Dandelion as a blush and only a teeny-tiny amount of bronzer as I was going out for a meal.
Verdict: If you’re wanting to experiment with cute spring colours to slowly move away from those winter berry shades, then I’d definitely recommend branching out to MUA‘s bargain £1 lipsticks before stepping it up to MAC prices. Unless you’re really set on a high end lip colour, I think it’s always worth experimenting with cheaper brands if you’re trying out shades you’re less familiar with. And if you’re like me and like to have a hundred different colours on hand in your handbag, you’re less likely to worry about losing a cheaper lipstick!
I can’t wait to stock up on more colours for spring and summer- I love bright corals and pinks, and the Revlon ColorBurst range of lip crayons and butters are high on my wishlist- I have one of their matte balm crayons and it is just beautiful. What are your recommendations for nice and bright pretty lip colours that stay on well? I need some more good ranges to choose from!
Hope you all have a lovely Easter, I’ll hopefully be doing a lifestyle post to let you all know what I get up to this weekend!
